BOCA RATON, Fla. – Barry University, the nation's sixth-ranked women's tennis team, had little trouble against Benedict College, taking a 5-0 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division II women's tennis South Region tournament.
Barry jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, winning all three doubles matches. Benedict's Karla Flores and Esther Zelaya won two sets at No. 1 doubles against the Barry's team of Sonja Larsen and Barbora Kijasova. Danyelle Copeland and Daniella Rios won one set at No. 2 doubles.
Barry clinched the match with straight set wins at No. 1 singles and No. 6 singles.
The Lady Tigers finish the season with a 17-6 record.
Barry, 18-3, advances to play fifth-ranked Lynn University at noon on Sunday for the region title.
