DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University will not renew the contract of softball head coach Theresa Stephens, the Department of Athletics announced Monday (May 9).
"We appreciate the efforts of Coach Stephens the last five seasons, but feel it is time for a change in the leadership of our softball program," said NCCU Director of Athletics Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree.
In five seasons as head softball coach at NCCU, Stephens guided the Lady Eagles to a win-loss record of 44-193, a winning percentage of .186. This season’s team posted an 8-42 record and did not qualify for the post-season conference tournament for a fifth straight year.
Associate athletics director Derrick Magee, who serves as the sport administrator for softball, will oversee program operations until a head coach is hired. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
