DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Officials at Bethune-Cookman University met on Tuesday afternoon to discuss options for evacuation and several other details to insure the safety of students and faculty/staff at the school. For the upcoming weekend, BCU is scheduled to participate in contests at the University of South Florida (volleyball), North Florida (cross country) and Southeastern Louisiana (football).
Due to the anticipated trajectory and strength of Hurricane Irma, and based on the information provided from the National Weather Service, Bethune-Cookman University, in consultation with of the Board of Trustees, Interim President Hubert Grimes is issuing a mandatory campus evacuation order effective today, September 5, 2017 at 5 p.m.
Students are directed to immediately begin making arrangements to evacuate the campus. All classes are canceled as of 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2017, until further notice, to allow students to safely travel in advance of the hurricane. All residence halls will close as of Wednesday, September 6, at 6 p.m., and the dining hall will close at 7 p.m.
A return date for students, staff and faculty will be published once the hurricane has passed and it is safe to return to campus. Arrangements for athletic teams have been made in consultation with Lynn W. Thompson (Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics), as well as all head coaches and student-athletes.
