BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kentucky State University (KSU) volleyball became SIAC champions once again in a 3-1 win over Claflin University (25-17, 25-15, 25-12, 25-14) Friday evening following a loss to Claflin earlier in the day to force a one-match playoff for the title.
The Thorobrettes’ victory notches their third SIAC Championship in four years as they were led by senior outside hitter Tahje Ochs, who killed a game-high 16 shots for the champs. Senior setter Anjelique Kyle added a game-high 40 assists for KSU in the win.
CU 3 KSU 1 (23-25, 19-25, 25-27)
The Thorobrettes were within reach of the championship earlier Friday but could not secure the victory as they dropped three straight sets to the Panthers.
Ochs led KSU with a game-high 20 kills while Kyle added a game-high 37 assists in the loss as the Thorobrettes prepared for the winner-take-all match later in the evening.
KSU 3 CU 1 (25-17, 15-25, 25-12, 25-14)
KSU trailed early in the first set of the championship match, giving up two straight points to trail 2-0 to Claflin. Later in the set, KSU claimed the lead following a 5-2 run and would not trail for the remainder of the frame, picking up the 25-17 victory to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Thorobrettes struggled in the second set of the night as they were unable to capture a lead in the 25-15 loss to tie the match up at one apiece.
KSU came out in the third stanza red hot, leaping out to a 6-1 lead to force a Panther timeout. The Thorobrettes' offensive attack continued after the break, outscoring the Panthers 19-11 to close out the frame and took a 2-1 advantage in the contest.
The Thorobrettes remained hot in the final set of the night, as KSU started the frame on a 9-3 run to force another Claflin timeout. The Thorobrettes dominated the remainder of the match, going on a 16-11 run, en route to an SIAC championship victory.
KSU will await its opponent in the NCAA tournament until Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) during the NCAA.com Selection Show.
