PETERSBURG, VA - The Shaw University Lady Bears captured the 2016 CIAA Volleyball Championship crown on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Fayetteville State University. The Lady Bears captured a 25-18 win in the opening set, clipped the Lady Broncos 25-22 in set two, and notched a 25-18 victory in the third set to secure the win.
Shaw will represent the CIAA in the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament with a 22-7 overall record. Fayetteville State ends the season with a 19-8 mark.
CIAA Tournament Most Valuable Player Kelly Murphy recorded 13 kills for the Lady Bears with Amari Fletcher notching 10 kills for Shaw. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez tallied 26 assists with Tiffany Brooks and Murphy each notching 14 digs.
Jayde Jacobs paced the Lady Broncos with 13 kills in the setback while Nakia McKinnie and Tilar Stanford notched 13 assists, and 10 assists, respectively. Arlicia Ortiz hauled in 18 digs for Fayetteville State while Samira Luis and McKinnie both totaled 10 digs on the day.
Shaw grabbed the momentum at the start of set one before Fayetteville State stormed back to knot the set 9-9. With the score tied 14-14, the Lady Bears rolled to an 11-4 run to close out the set with a 25-18 victory.
The Lady Broncos regrouped to take a 9-4 lead early in set two. Down but not out, the Lady Bears chipped away at the deficit and orchestrated a 6-0 run, resulting in a narrow 10-9 advantage. With the score tied 20-20, two Lady Bronco errors pushed Shaw ahead 22-20. The Lady Bears controlled the momentum for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-22 win using a kill by Murphy.
With the score tied 2-2, kills by Murphy and Aisja Jones along with a service ace pushed Shaw ahead 5-2. After taking the early lead, the Lady Bears never looked back and maintained the momentum as well as the lead for the remainder of the contest. Murphy secured the 25-18 win with a kill.
The Lady Bears advance to the NCAA Atlantic Regional with an automatic berth. The NCAA Selection Show will air on Monday, November 21st at 7:30pm at www.ncaa.com.
