PRINCESS ANNE, Md. --- The Howard University Bison captured the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship title on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Florida A&M University at the W. P. Hytche Athletic Center.
The Bison won their second straight MEAC Volleyball Tournament title and ninth overall. Also, the regular-season MEAC Northern Division champions improved its winning streak to 16 straight, having not lost a match since Sept. 17.
Khaila Donaldson was named the Tournament Outstanding Performer. She averaged a double-double of 13.0 kills per match and 15.6 digs per match. In the championship finale, Donaldson finished with 13 kills, 13 digs and one block. Jessica Young added 13 kills, seven blocks and four digs and Katherine Broussard tallied 11 kills and 18 digs.
Bison Head Coach Shaun Kupferberg was named the Outstanding Coach for the second consecutive season.
“I think our gameplan worked well,” Kupferberg said. “I think we didn’t do well in the service game, but we were balanced in our hitting. It is always special to win a championship, especially a conference championship. Now we shift our focus from winning a conference title to the NCAA Tournament.”
Nicole Abreu paced Florida A&M with a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs. Elena Dimitrova added 41 assists and 13 digs. Maria Yvette Garcia registered eight kills and 13 digs, while Valentina Carrasco recorded a team-high 21 digs.
Howard (26-5) advances to the NCAA Tournament in December. The Bison will find out their seeding and their opponent during the NCAA selection show on Sunday, November 27 at 9 p.m. The show will air live on ESPNU.
