ALBANY, Ga. – Morehouse won the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s Cross Country Championship on Friday morning at Albany State University in Albany, Ga.siacmxc17

The Maroon Tigers claimed their 22nd championship in 24 years and finished with a team score of 42 points. Six of seven Morehouse runners finished in the top 20, including three student-athletes who placed in the top 10. Coach Willie H. Hill of Morehouse was named the 2017 SIAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Senior Trey Simons of Morehouse led the field of 76 by finishing first with a time of 25:17.97 in the 8k race. Simons was joined by teammates Kiplimo Collins (26:08.69), and Randy Carter Jr. (27:09.90) who finished third and seventh respectively. Morehouse recorded an average time of 27:04.53.

Albany State finished second by securing two spots in the top 10. The Golden Rams recorded a team score of 59 and were led by Zackery Johnson (27:13.18), and Jamorris Hill (27:41.42).

Benedict placed third at this year’s meet with 64 points. Haregot Gebreyesus finished fourth overall with a time of 26:19.19 ahead of teammates Evans Korir (26:26.17) and Amos Chebii (26:44.36) who placed fifth and sixth respectively.

LeMoyne-Owen was fourth (116), followed by Central State (127), Kentucky State (149), Tuskegee (196), Claflin (202), Clark Atlanta (220), Lane (241), Fort Valley State (283), Miles (299), and Paine (302).

The 2017 NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country South Regional Championship is set for November 4 in Lakeland, Fla.
