WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Bowie State defense made two huge interceptions in the end zone and came away with a 23-13 road win at Winston-Salem State on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 5-0 on the season (2-0 CIAA) while Winston-Salem State falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
"The guys were resilient, and Winston gave us everything they had", said Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson after the game. "We went into halftime and it was a dogfight and we knew that. The guys came out in the second half and against some adversity we finally got the good field position and went into score."
Winston-Salem State draws first blood at the 11:44 mark of the second quarter as Farrell Murchinson scores on a 3-yard run to give the Rams a 7-0 lead.
With 4:35 to go in the second quarter, Dominique Graves connected with Cameron Williams for a 20-yard touchdown pass and catch but the PAT was blocked and returned for two points by Tevin Singleton (District Height, Md.), setting the score at 13-2 Winston-Salem State.
The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 13-9 following on a 23-yard scamper by Ja’rome Johnson (Washington, D.C.) at the 1:33 mark of the second quarter.
Bowie State takes the lead with 18 seconds to go in the third quarter on a Johnson to DuShon David (Washington, D.C.) 3-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bulldogs a 16-13 advantage, capping off a-play, 98-yard drive.
Demetri Morsell (Upper Marlboro, Md.) picked off his second interception of the game with 2:18 remaining in the contest, killing a WSSU Rams scoring threat. "I wasn't surprised," Wilson said about the passing play on third down. "They had been doing a good job running the ball, so I think they maybe tried to catch us off guard, but Demetri stayed home and did his job. He also caught one while going out of bounds so he's a great athlete", stated Wilson.
The Bulldogs were not able to capitalize on the Rams turnover. Bowie State’s Kenny Amaya (Bladensburg, Md.) booted a career-long 64-yard punt, pinning Winston-Salem State at the Rams’ 5-yard line. With 34 seconds left on the Bowman Gray Stadium scoreboard.
WSSU’s Graves first pass of the drive was incomplete and his second pass was a pick six by BSU’s Tevin Singleton and returned for a 12-yard touchdown sealing the Bulldogs win.
Johnson led the Bulldogs offensively with a career-high 122 rushing yards and added 77 passing yards in the victory. Redshirt freshman Darius Bowman caught a team-high three receptions for a team-high 45 yards while senior Anthony Howard (Temple Hills, Md.) led all defensive players with a game-high 11 tackles (7 solo).
The Bowie State defense sacked Winston-Salem State quarterbacks four times with Jason Rogers (Laurel, Md.) accounting for a pair while Jonathan Ross (Waldorf, Md.) and Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, Md.) tacked on one each.
The Bulldogs return home next Saturday (October 12) to host the Chowan University Hawks in a 1 p.m. Homecoming game in Bulldogs Stadium.
