New Orleans (GCAConf.com) – Talladega, Dillard, Philander Smith and Xavier earned the top four seeds in the 2016 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament, the league announced Sunday afternoon. The tournament will be played from March 4-6 on the campuses of Dillard University and Xavier University. Talladega, winner of its second consecutive regular season championship, receives a first-round bye into Saturday's semifinals.
Talladega, which finished the regular season with an 11-1 record, will open play at 2 p.m. in Saturday's semifinals. Dillard earns the second seed with an 8-4 conference mark, their highest finish since the 2003-04 season. The Bleu Devils will begin play on Friday at 5 p.m. on their home court in Dent Hall.
Philander Smith and Xavier finished the regular season with identical 6-6 records, but the Panthers swept the season series between the two schools and claimed the No. 3 seed. Xavier enters the tournament as the fourth seed, their lowest since finishing sixth in 2009-10. Philander Smith will open tournament play at 12 p.m. on Friday and Xavier will open play at 2 p.m.
Tougaloo won three of its final four conference games to earn the No. 5 seed with a 5-7 conference record and will face off against Xavier at 2 p.m. on Friday. Edward Waters' 4-8 conference mark earned the Tigers the sixth seed and they will face Philander Smith at 12 p.m. on Friday. Southern University at New Orleans finishes as the conference's No. 7 seed with a 2-10 mark. The Knights will face city rival Dillard in the opening round of play.
GCAC Tournament semifinal games will be played at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Xavier University Convocation Center. The championship game is scheduled to tip off at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday.
