PRAIRIE VIEW, TX - For the first time in the history of the Prairie View A&M women’s basketball team’s program, the Lady Panthers have been invited to play in the 26th annual preseason WNIT Tournament as they prepare for the upcoming 2019-20 basketball season.WNITlogoblue

“We are thrilled to have been selected to participate in the 2019 Preseason WNIT,” Head PVAMU women’s basketball coach Sandy Pugh said. “We will have a very young, but a very athletic team. We are looking forward to the high level of competition as we kick off what we hope to be another banner year for PVAMU Women’s Basketball.”

The team's debut selection includes three guaranteed games during the November event. Afterwards, the team will participate in bracket play, with first-round matchups that are set to be announced later this spring.

Bracket games will be hosted by the various participating schools, while the championship game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.

The Lady Panthers finished the 2018-19 season 17-14 overall, going 13-5 in SWAC play, for the team’s first winning record since the 2012-13 season. Prairie View forced more than 21 turnovers a game last season, ranking ninth-best in the nation.

Players to watch include the team’s top scorer, senior Dominique Newman, who averaged 8.3 ppg and led the team in steals (59). With the new additions of freshmen Kennedi Green and Gerlyn Smith (18 ppg, 7rpg) the team will have a different flare on and off the court.

Along with Southwestern Athletic Conference team Prairie View A&M the 2019 Preseason WNIT field also includes Boise State (Mountain West), Davidson (Atlantic 10), DePaul (Big East), Drexel (Colonial Athletic), Miami OH (Mid-American), Missouri State (Missouri Valley), Oklahoma (Big 12), Oregon State (Pac-12), Pacific (West Coast Conference), Portland State (Big Sky), South Alabama (Sun Belt), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Southland), UAB (Conference USA), UC Irvine (Big West) and UMKC (Western Athletic).
