NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament will play on in Norfolk, Virginia for an additional three years following the 2015 event.
“I would like to thank Mayor Paul Fraim, the City Council, Norfolk City Manager Marcus Jones and city staff for their continued support of the MEAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament,” said Commissioner Dennis Thomas. “We are elated to extend this great partnership for another three years.”
Commissioner Dennis Thomas made the announcement today alongside MEAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball coaches, city staff and Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim.
“I’m pleased MEAC has chosen Norfolk to serve as basketball tournament host for three more years, said Norfolk Mayor Paul D. Fraim. Along with exciting and entertaining basketball, MEAC’s strong emphasis on education provides reading and college opportunities to our public school students and their thousands of fans generate significant economic activity for our local restaurants and attractions. We are eager to welcome them back.”
Norfolk, Virginia has served as the host city since 2013. The new agreement keeps MEAC in Norfolk through 2018. All tournament games are held at the Norfolk Scope Arena. Additional ancillary events including the annual Cheerleading Championship and post-game concerts and parties also make up the overall festivities of the tournament experience. MEAC will continue its highly successful Read with the MEAC program and College Fair event.
The tournament features all 13 MEAC member institutions including local schools Hampton and Norfolk State.
