LANGSTON – TIm Whitfield posted a career high 182 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns, carrying the NAIA No. 19 Langston Lions past Panhandle State University 35-14 to open conference play Saturday night at W.E. Anderson stadium.
The Lions drew first blood in the opening quarter following a 21-yard touchdown run by Whitfield. Langston raced out to a 21-0 halftime advantage after tacking on a 18-yard touchdown run by RaQuan Washington and another touchdown run by Whitfield.
OPSU trimmed the lead to 21-7 after a 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown by De'Ardyelle Fites. Langston countered with a 49-yard touchdown pass and 14-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Shaputis and Daylon Person respectively.
Tim Whitfield finished the day with 182 yards on 19 carries with two scores to lead all rushers. Washington finished the day four-for-20 for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Shaputis led all receivers with two receptions for 95 yards and one score.
Next week, Langston (2-1, 1-0 SAC) travels to face Lyon College on Oct. 5. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Batesville, Ark.
