BOWIE, Md. - After Bowie State University advanced two spots in the AFCA Poll, following last week’s victory against Alderson Broaddus, the #23 Bulldogs continued its winning ways, with a 54-6 win over Saint Augustine’s University on Saturday afternoon.
This was the CIAA conference opener for both teams and the 7th time Bowie State (4-0, 1-0 CIAA) and Saint Augustine’s (0-4, 0-1 CIAA) have met on the gridiron.
As a team, Bowie State rolled up a season-high 526 yards of total offense and held Saint Augustine’s to 186 yards, the second lowest yardage total allowed this season.
As starting junior quarterback Gaston Cooper (Silver Spring, Md.) sat out of this contest, with a sore left ankle, junior Ja’rome Johnson (Washington, D.C.) made his first career start under center and did not disappoint. Johnson completed 19-of-29 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback also led the rushing attack for 58 yards and two touchdowns. In total, the Bulldogs ran for 248 yards and scored three touchdowns on the afternoon.
For the third-consecutive week, senior DuShon David (Washington, D.C.) was the leading receiver for the Bulldogs with 117 yards on seven receptions. Junior Dante Waugh (Sicklerville, N.J.) was second on the team in reception yards with 64 yards. In total, the Bulldogs wideouts gained 318 yards on 21 catches.
Defensively, Anthony Howard paced the Bulldogs for the fourth game in a row, accounting for seven tackles (five solo) while redshirt sophomore Joshua Pryor was second in team total tackles with five.
Bowie State used a 16-yard pass from Johnson to freshman Victor Olayinka (Glenarden, Md.), to secure its first points of the game at the 10:30 mark which give the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead.
Minutes later, at the 7:35 mark, David hauled in a 16-yard pass from Johnson, extending the Bulldogs lead 14-0 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs found the end zone again with a 2-yard run by Johnson, giving Bowie State a comfortable 21-0 lead with 9:06 remaining.
A minute before the half ended, Johnson ran for another touchdown, this time for 19-yards, which gave Bowie State a 28-0 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Bowie State obtained a safety at the 13:30 mark, stretching its lead to 30-0.
David followed that up with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Johnson, at the 10:12 mark, spreading Bowie State’s lead to 37-0.
At the 7:24 mark of quarter three, Waugh caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Johnson, pushing its lead to 44-0 on the evening.
Two minutes before the period ended, redshirt freshman Elisha McDonald (Greenbelt, Md.) shredded the Falcons defense for a 50-yard run, expanding Bowie State’s lead 51-0.
In the fourth quarter, senior Gene Carson II (Accokeek, Md.) connected on a 24-yard field goal which extended Bowie State’s lead to 54-0.
However, with 48 seconds left in the game, Saint Augustine’s E’Kwon White hauled in a 50-yard pass from quarterback D’Ontre Gilliard, to put the Falcons on the board and avoid a shutout (54-6).
Next up for the Bulldogs will be road contest at Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University on Saturday (October 5) at 2 p.m. in Bowman Gray Stadium.
